How to Make an Origami Cube With One Sheet of Paper

If you have experience folding paper in the art of origami, then making a cube won't be particularly challenging. But if you have little experience, the process will be more difficult, primarily because you may not be familiar with the basic folds and visualizing it will be more difficult. Although there is more than one way to make an origami cube, it can be done using a single, square sheet of paper. Beginners should work with a larger square of at least 8 inches by 8 inches.

Instructions

    • 1

Crease the paper along the diagonals. Do this by folding the paper so opposite corners meet and make a crease. Do this both in directions and unfold the paper so you are looking at a creased X.

    • 2

Fold the top edge over to the bottom, but do not crease. Instead, use the existing creases to push the paper's sides inward (inside). The result is a triangle with the point at the top and the insides "fan folded" inward. Actually, you have two triangles: a top triangle and a bottom triangle that will be folded separately.

    • 3

Take the bottom two corners of the top triangle and fold them so that they point upward and line up with the top point. Now it appears you have a diamond shape on top with the bottom triangle still intact.

    • 4

Fold the right and left point of the diamond inward, so that their points meet along the center line of the diamond shape. The resulting shape is six-sided, like a crystal. The two sides you just folded in create a little pocket.

    • 5

Fold the two corners at the peak (these were the original corners of your top triangle) downward and tuck each into one of the little pockets you made in the last step. This is the trickiest part and might take a little fiddling to get them into place. They should completely tuck inside.

    • 6

Turn the paper over and repeat the folding steps to the bottom triangle. Continue until both sides look the same. The resulting shape should still be hexagonal.

    • 7

Fold the top point down to make a square edge and unfold. Repeat this for the bottom point of the hexagon. This is makes creases for the cube.

    • 8

Blow into the end of the hexagon that has the hole. This is where all the corners came together. The paper will pop open into a cube.
