How to Restore CMD & BAT File Type Associations

A file association is the operating system's method for keeping things running smoothly, always aiming to open a certain file type with a specific program. Restoring the file association type for "CMD" and "BAT" files will enable you to assign a desired program to open these files, overwriting the existing extension that already is in place on your computer's OS.

Instructions

1. Right-click "Start" and select "Explore."

2. Navigate to a location on your computer where CMD and BAT files are stored.

3. Right-click on either file type and select "Open with."

4. Click on "Choose Program" and select the program that will be associated with this type of file. Click the box stating "Always use this program to open this type of file."

5. Repeat the procedure for the other file extension type.
