How to Choose the Best Messy Hairstyle for a Guy

How to Choose the Best Messy Hairstyle for a Guy thumbnail
Make sure your messy hairstyle complements your face shape

Achieving a messy hair style is more than rolling out of bed and avoiding the comb or brush. Men's messy hairstyles, while popular, take practice to master. There are several approaches to the messy guy's style---from long and wild to short and unorganized, choosing the best messy hairstyle for a guy requires an evaluation of several factors before arriving at the perfect messy look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your face shape. Although stars, such as Brad Pitt and Robert Pattinson, can wear a messy "just rolled out of bed" do, not all men can pull off the same look. Consider your features, including jaw line, chin, forehead and cheekbones. For example, a man with a high forehead might look better with windswept bangs. Men with round or square faces typically want to deemphasize the rounded jaw or chin area with a layered, well structured style. Men with oblong or rectangular faces need to downplay a high hairline or forehead. Triangular faced men with pointed chins look best with cuts cropped closely to the crown and temples. If you are lucky enough to have an oval face shape you can wear any style.

Evaluate your hair consistency. You may have the length and basic shape down, but how does your hair look if you let it go wild? Men with straight, thick hair can typically wear just about any messy style. Thinning extra thick straight hair will let you keep the style messy without having it look unkempt. Curly or wavy hair requires extra work in order to tame the wave and curl; use pomade or defrizzing hair gel. Also, ask your stylist to use thinning shears when she cuts your hair in order to maintain a messy style without the frizz.

Determine how you plan to maintain your messy hairstyle. Whether you plan to wear your hair long, short, curly or straight, you will need to put forth some time and effort to maintain a messy but stylish do. If you are the type of guy who can only handle spending a few minutes on your hair, then stick to a shorter cut that doesn't require a lot of primping and styling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep hair products on hand, such as pomade, hair gel, hair spray and thickening gel to help you sculpt and shape your messy do.

  • Visit your hairstylist every six weeks to maintain your style.
