Instructions for Crocheting Dog Sweaters
While smaller dogs have more of a reputation or tendency to get cold during the winter months, in truth, dog sweaters can be made for dogs of any size. A hand-crocheted dog sweater makes a great present for the animal lover in your life, and dog sweaters can be used simply to make a fashion statement with no connection to the weather whatsoever.
Things You'll Need
- 1-3 balls of yarn depending on the size of your dog
- Crochet hook size H (8) or 5mm
- 2 buttons
- Blunt needle
Instructions

1
Chain 20 (or more depending on the size of your dog). Double crochet in the 4th chain from your hook and in each chain across for a total of 18 stitches. Turn.
-
2
Chain three, make two double crochet stitches in first stitch, and double crochet in each stitch across, making three double crochets in the last stitch for a total of 22 double-crochet stitches.
-
-
3
Chain three, and double crochet in each stitch across, turn. Then repeat as above for next row (chain three, two double crochets in the first stitch, one in each stitch across and three double crochets in the last stitch) for a total of 26 stitches. Repeat both of these rows again.
-
4
Chain three, double crochet in each stitch across and turn. 4 times.
-
5
Chain two and double crochet in the next stitch, then in each stitch across until the last two stitches, double crochet these two stitches together. Repeat four times. Then double crochet in each stitch across for the last two rows.
Shaping the Neck
-
6
Join yarn to the first stitch of the last row and chain eight. Fasten off. Then join yarn to the last stitch of the last row worked and chain nine.
-
7
Single crochet in the second chain from hook and in each of the nine chain stitches, then continue on and single crochet in each of the next 22 stitches, then in each of the eight chains you added on the other side. Turn. Single crochet in each stitch across for three more rows, adding two extra stitches in the beginning and end for a total of 50 stitches across.
-
8
Chain five (or less depending on the size of your button) and make a loop. This will be your button hole. Sew button on to other side of neck.
-
9
Chain as many stitches as needed to make it halfway across the belly of your dog. Single crochet in each stitch across two more times. Repeat to make two ties.
-
10
Attach ties to the center of your dog sweater so that they can be tied around the middle of your dog to secure the sweater.
