Connect a microphone preamp to your mixer to receive audio input from a powered microphone.

As a live performer or recording artist using an elaborate setup, there may come an instance in which you need to connect your microphone to a mixer. Depending on which kind of microphone you are using, you may require or prefer additional amplification. Amplifiers for condenser microphones and others that use additional power and amplification are known as preamps. After attaching your microphone, connect its preamp to the mixer's compatible input port for optimal efficacy.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the appropriate input for both your mixer and microphone preamp. Your devices will have either XLR or ¼-inch TRS inputs and outputs. Many mixers and preamps have both. However, you can purchase a TRS-to-¼-inch XLR cable if your mixer and microphone preamp have different ports. Acquire the appropriate cable from an audio supply retailer if a compatible one did not come included with your microphone preamp.

    • 2

Insert one end of the XLR, ¼-inch TRS or XLR-to-¼-inch TRS cable into an audio output port on the microphone preamp. Connect the cable to a port labeled "Out," "Output," "Line Out" or "To Mixer," depending on your mic preamp's model.

    • 3

Insert the other end of the cable into an available input port on the mixer. Connect the cable to a port labeled "Input," "Mic" or "Line In," depending on your mixer's model.
