How to Insulate Water Pipes From Freeze Damage
Most homes in northern climates are constructed with water pipes insulated inside the frame of the home. Nonetheless, each winter thousands of homes experience frozen water pipes. The savvy do-it-yourself homeowner can avoid the inconvenience and expense of frozen and broken water pipes by employing simple and inexpensive preventive measures. Does this Spark an idea?

Attic window Add insulation to the home or structure. Install thick foam board around the perimeter of the foundation. Wrap insulation around pipes in attics and crawl spaces. Secure with duct tape. Adding additional insulation will not only prevent pipes from freezing during a severe drop in temperature but also will save energy and lower heating bills.

2
Seal all holes around the base of the foundation. Squirrels, mice and other wildlife often burrow under homes, seeking warmth. These holes allow freezing air to come in contact with water lines and pipes. Fill holes with foam insulation that molds to fill the hole and hardens to an impermeable barrier. Seal all possible cold air leaks around pipes, air vents, dryer vents and electrical outlets.

Dripping faucet Allow water pipes to drip slightly during sub-zero weather. The slight movement of the water within the pipe prevents freeze-up. A steady drip, at the lowest pressure and preferably from a pipe on an outside wall, can prevent a costly repair project.

Tape measure Wrap pipes with heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables. Pay special attention to pipes located on exterior walls or with a northern exposure. Make sure that you use the right kind of electrical tape. Use exterior tape for any location where the tape is exposed to the elements and interior for that purpose only. Heat tape in various lengths is available online or from hardware stores, electrical contractors and building supply centers. Choose the amount needed by measuring the length of the pipe and multiplying by three. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Tips & Warnings
Wear gloves, protective eye wear and a dust mask when working with insulation materials. Never attempt to thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame (light or blow torch). This method could further damage the pipe and possibly start a house fire.
