How to Take Off a Transmission on a Classic Mustang
Classic Mustangs were equipped with one of three automatic transmissions: the FMX, the C4 and the C6. Each transmission featured three forward gears and one reverse gear. All three transmissions were quite durable, but the C6 is considered to be the strongest, and was the only transmission used in the high-performance models. Removing an automatic transmission from a classic Mustang is a straightforward job, and the process is the same for all three transmission types.

1
Disconnect and remove the starter motor from the front of the transmission on the passenger's side with a wrench. A single securing bolt is located at the top of the starter, and a second securing bolt is located at the bottom. The starter motor's wire does not have to be removed.
-
2
Lift the car with a jack and support it with safety stands positioned underneath each frame rail.
-
-
3
Remove the two U-bolts that secure the back of the driveshaft to the differential with a wrench, then pull the driveshaft out of the back of the transmission.
-
4
Disconnect the speedometer cable from the driver's side of the transmission with a wrench. The cable features an in-line nut at its tip. Twist the nut in a counterclockwise direction with the wrench until the cable detaches from the transmission.
-
5
Disconnect the gear shift rod from the driver's side of the transmission. The rod attaches to a lever on the side of the transmission with a bolt and nut combination. Remove the bolt and nut with a wrench, then pull the rod off of the lever.
-
6
Disconnect the torque converter from the flywheel. The torque converter is located inside the transmission's bell housing. The converter is attached to the back of the flywheel with four nuts. Access the nuts through the slotted access panel at the bottom of the bell housing, then remove the nuts with a wrench.
-
7
Remove the bolts that secure the bell housing to the back of the engine block with a wrench.
-
8
Position a jack underneath the center of the transmission, then raise the jack until it just starts to lift the transmission.
-
9
Remove the two bolts that secure the transmission's crossmember to the Mustang's frame with a wrench. One bolt is located on each end of the crossmember.
-
10
Slowly lower the transmission with the jack while simultaneously pulling the transmission toward the back of the Mustang. The transmission will disconnect from the engine when the four torque converter studs slide out of the flywheel.
