However, before you decide to buy new property in your area or fix up the property you own, it might be helpful to find the average home price for your particular area. Having this information will assist you in making smart decisions about the financial and personal future of you and your family.

Instructions

For Your City

1. Visit the U.S. Census Bureau website, and find the "Fast Access to Information" section.

2. Type in your city and state or zip code, and click "Go."

3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen. On the "Housing Characteristics" section, you'll find the median value of homes in your area.

For Your Area

1. Look up several homes in your neighborhood if you want to find the average value of homes in an area smaller than your city. You can look up homes on websites like RealEstate.com.

2. Enter the specific address of the homes in your area, and click "Get Home Value" for each one. This will give you the estimated value of the home in a dollar amount.

3. Add the values of all the homes you found together, and divide that number by the amount of homes you looked up. The number you get is the average home price in your area.
