How to Make a Musical Flute
A flute is a woodwind instrument characterized by its lack of a reed. Instead, the flute produces sound when the player gently blows air over the top of the flute's mouthpiece. You can make a homemade flute that really works out of a cardboard wrapping paper tube.
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut the cardboard wrapping paper tube to 12 and 1/2 inches long.
-
2
Measure three inches from one end of the tube, and cut a mouthpiece that is 1/2 inch long by 1/3 inch wide.
-
-
3
Measure four inches from the mouthpiece and mark the position of your first hole. Mark positions for five additional holes, spacing them 1/2 inch apart and in a straight line.
-
4
Use the point of the pen or the scissors to poke holes in the marked positions.
-
5
Place the cardboard tube upright on the index card, and trace around the edge. Cut out the resulting circle.
-
6
To make a stopper, gently push the circle into the open end of the cardboard tube (the end with the mouthpiece), blocking the opening as tightly as possible.
-
7
Play your new flute as you would a traditional flute.

Tips & Warnings
You can also use bamboo, PVC pipe, wood, or metal to make a flute, although these require stronger, more elaborate tools to make.
