How to Start Your Own Information Consulting Company
Information consultants are considered to be "experts" in a particular field or topic. Individuals and businesses often hire consultants to teach them new information, locate latent problems, and suggest new and innovative solutions that will allow the business to grow. Common types of information consultants that serve businesses include: accountants, auditors, and consultants in the human resources, public relations, marketing, grant writing and computer/technology areas. However, not all consultants serve business. Some work with individuals in matters such as image, career, nutrition and spiritual consulting. Just about anyone can become a consultant if he has a strong base of knowledge on a particular topic.

1
Determine your specialty. Take a personal inventory of your skills and past work experiences. It is helpful to write these items in list form on a piece of paper. Use these items to come up with possibilities for consultant services. Take a look at each option and cross off those that you are not interested in or enthusiastic about. From the remaining options, choose the one that you feel the most passionate about or interested in.

2
Determine whether you need additional training or certifications before you begin consulting. If you choose a specialty that you're not necessarily an "expert" in, you will need to take coursework or receive additional training before you can consult in the field. Additionally, some consultants, such as tax professionals, accountants and auditors, are required to obtain a license or certification from their state. To find out if your state requires specific certifications or licenses, contact your state's Secretary of State.

Set your price. Most consultants bill by the hour. You may set your hourly rate as high or low as you wish. However, it is a good idea to find out what other consultants in your field are charging in order to stay competitive but not undervalue your services. It is also advisable to take into account your degree of expertise when setting your hourly rate.

4
Market and advertise your services. At a bare minimum, you should have professional-looking business cards printed. Give cards to everyone that you know and to each new business connection that you make. Many consultants have brochures printed up and mailed to businesses or residences (depending on your target market). Additionally, offering free consultations and training sessions is an effective way make connections and find new clients.
