Completing form MV-1 is the first step to obtaining a title in Georgia.

The state of Georgia Motor Vehicle Division requires a title for all automobiles year 1986 or newer that are purchased in or moved to the state. If your vehicle is not registered within 30 days of purchase a penalty fee is added. This fee is waived if the car is titled in another state. All of the forms that are required when transferring a title can be downloaded from the Motor Vehicle Division website or obtained at its office.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete Form MV-1, Title/Tag Application. For jointly owned cars, information on both individuals must be included on the form. Both owners must also sign the form.

    • 2

Provide proof of ownership. If the car is financed or leased, provide the original registration and a completed Form T-17, Affidavit of Title Being Held by a Lien or Security Interest Holder or Leasing Company. If you own the car, an original title from another state is adequate. Owners who do not have an original title can submit original registration and a completed Form T-22B, Certification of Inspection.

    • 3

Show proof of insurance. A valid insurance card, issued insurance binder or state issued certificate of self-insurance are all acceptable forms for proof of insurance.

    • 4

Pass an emissions inspection if your county requires one. This is common in the Metro Atlanta area.

    • 5

Apply in person, with all the above information, at the tag office in the Georgia county in which you live or at the tax commissioner's office in your home county.

    • 6

Pay by check or money order the fees and taxes due. Taxes and fees will vary based on the vehicle and the county in which it is registered.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Georgia title will be mailed to the lien or lease holder if you do not own your car outright.

  • All forms must be completed fully and legibly. The division will not accept forms with erasures or alterations.
