How to Install a High Speed Modem, Filters and Wireless Router thumbnail
Wireless routers allow multiple computers to get online.

Dial-up connections were mainly designed to work with only one computer at a time. Setting up a home network with high-speed Internet is much more involved. Modems, filters and routers are all part of a complete wireless home network using high-speed DSL.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which phone jacks are being used. Place a filter on each of these phone jacks and connect the device that was there into the filter. This will prevent the devices from interfering with the DSL signal to the modem. They also prevent the phones from getting line noise.

    • 2

Connect the high-speed modem directly into the phone jack where you want it stationed. If you need to connect a phone to this same jack you can use a two-port DSL filter here. Ensure that the DSL is connected to the correctly labeled port on the filter.

    • 3

Connect the included power cords to the modem and the router. Connect an Ethernet cord from the only Ethernet port on the modem to the incoming Ethernet port on the router.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your modem has multiple Ethernet ports, it is already a router and may need to be placed into bridge mode to have another router behind it.

  • Only use the power cords from manufacturers of the equipment to prevent hardware failures.
