If you have a laptop and no way of connecting to the Internet via WiFi or modem, you can use your Bluetooth enabled handset. This process is normally done with data cords on phones that are not Bluetooth enabled. However, if you have a Bluetooth enabled phone that can be used as an Internet modem, you can connect to the Internet on your PC without using data cords.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a monthly Internet plan with your service provider. Only certain companies, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon, allow you to use your cell phone as a PC modem. Modem packages and Internet usage fees range from $40 to $80 a month. You must notify the wireless provider when you sign up for the service that you plan on using your cell phone as a modem.

Choose a modem enabled cell phone. Companies such as Sprint, Verizon and AT&T have a variety of phones you can use as Bluetooth modems for your PC. At the moment, T-Mobile only has the T-Mobile T Wing handset.

    • 3

Download the Communications Manager software from the wireless provider's website. This free program is necessary for your computer to pick up the Bluetooth dial-up from your phone.

    • 4

Follow the onscreen prompts to completely install the software.

    • 5

Go to "My Bluetooth Places" from your taskbar and right-click it. Go down to "Enable" and enable the connection. Open the Bluetooth connection on your cell phone.

    • 6

Double-click the "Find Bluetooth Places" icon. The next window should show your cell phone's icon. Right-click this icon to highlight "Pair Devices." You will be prompted to enter a Bluetooth pin code your cell phone manufacturer provides. You will also be asked to enter this same passcode on your cell phone.

    • 7

Open the "Communication Manager" software from your desktop or "Start Menu." Follow the onscreen prompts to connect to the Internet. Once connected, open your Internet browser as normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you're connected to Bluetooth, you can turn your cell phone on hidden. This will keep nearby Bluetooth users from discovering your handset.
