How to Install Pavers Over a Cement Slab
Pavers (both stone and concrete) are a commonly used material for exterior spaces such as patios, walkways and driveways. In some cases, home are built with cement slabs that serve as a patio space, and while it usually serves its purpose effectively, the addition of pavers is a common choice that usually comes at an affordable cost. While pavers are usually installed over prepared soil and sand, cement slabs are an ideal application surface, as they are solid and level. The process of installing pavers over a cement slab is a generally straightforward task that can be effectively completed by just about anyone. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Wheelbarrow
- Mortar mix
- Brick trowel
- Concrete pavers
- Angle grinder with masonry blade
- Bedding sand
- Broom

Mix the mortar in the wheel barrow as specified on the mortar packaging, using the shovel.

Evenly apply a thick layer (about 1 inch) to the bottom side of a paver, using the brick trowel, and press the paver to a corner of the cement slab surface with enough pressure to compress the 1-inch layer of mortar to about 3/4 inch. Repeat this process, working your way outward (over the remaining cement slab surface) from the first paver while leaving a minimal gap between each paver (less than 1/16 inch). Trim any pavers to fit, using the angle grinder with the masonry blade, as needed; refer to the angle grinder and masonry blade owner's manual for any safety and operation instructions.

Allow the mortar to cure completely (as specified on its packaging) before moving on.

Evenly spread a small amount of bedding sand over the paver surface, using the broom to fill any gaps between pavers; the bedding sand will act as a grout.
