Windows 2000 Pro allows you to set up a home network between two or more computers so that you can share documents, music and other files. Windows 2000 Pro does not have the same streamlined network setup that later Windows versions use, but the operating system offers an easy process to set up your home network.

      Right-click "My Network Places." Click "Network and Dial-Up Connections."

      Right-click "Local Area Network." Click on "Properties."

      Click "Internet Protocol(TCI/IP). Make sure that the radio button for "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected. Click "OK." Restart the computer.

      Right-click "My Computer." Click "Properties."

      Choose the "Network Identification" tab. Click "Properties." Name your computer in the "Computer Name" text box.

      Select "Workgroup Name" and enter in a name. Make a note of this, as you will need the information when you connect other computers to the Windows 2000 Pro network.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can enter in the IP address of the computer directly if you know it, but it's not typically necessary for a home network.
