Instructions

    • 1

Make a slip knot on your crochet hook. Chain (ch) 17, for a scarf. Chain 60 for a shawl. Increase the number of chains if you would like a wider scarf or shawl. This shawl is the same shape as a scarf, just wider so it covers the shoulders and arms.

    • 2

Single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the stitch. Work a sc in the remainder of the chains in the row. Chain 1 and turn your work to the other side.

    • 3

Work a sc in the second stitch from the hook and in each additional stitch to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn. Repeat this step until the scarf or shawl is the length you desire. An average length for a scarf is 48 inches. An average length for a shawl is 58 inches.

    • 4

Omit the chain 1 at the end of the last row. Instead, cut the yarn about 3 inches from the crochet hook. Pull open the loop around the hook and remove it. Pull the cut end of the yarn through the loop and pull tight.

    • 5

Work the tail of yarn through (in and out) of the stitches in the last row, until the end is no longer visible.

Tips & Warnings

  • More advanced crochet patterns can be made with alternated stitches, such as half crochet, double crochet or treble crochet.

  • This is also a great pattern for a multicolor scarf, using yarn scraps.
