How to Open a Rar File in Linux

RAR archive files are typically meant to be used with the Windows operating system. However, the Linux operating system can also understand the format and extract or add files to an archive. Linux does not come with this technology pre-installed, however. You'll have to install the software using the tools built into Linux as well as an Internet connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the "Unrar-Free" software onto your Linux computer. This application does not come pre-installed on the Linux operating system, but is a free official download through the Linux software distribution center. To install the "Unrar-Free" software, press the "ALT" and "F2" keys at the same time and then type "sudo apt-get install unrar-free" (without quotation marks) into the box that appears. Click on the "OK" button to install the software.

    • 2

Locate the RAR file you'd like to open in Linux.

    • 3

Double click on the RAR file. The contents of the RAR file will now open in the Linux Archive Manager.
