Save

YouTube.com is a website housing thousands of videos that you can watch on your computer. You may decide that you'd like to see them on your television as well. To do so, you will need to connect your computer to your television screen. Depending on the video inputs your television has, there are several different connection options available.

Things You'll Need

  • Wired or wireless internet connection
  • VGA connection cable
  • Video converter box
  • Component or composite video cables
  • Computer speakers

Television with a VGA Input

  • Place your computer near the television. Connect one end of the VGA cable to the VGA out port on the computer or laptop. Connect the other end into the VGA input for the television.

  • Plug the wire for the internet into the back of the computer or laptop. If your connection is wireless, check your router to make sure the internet is working properly.

  • Plug the computer speaker into the computer's audio out port . Plug the power cord of the speakers into a wall outlet.

  • Turn the television on. Follow the instructions in your television's manual to set the display to the VGA input.

  • Turn the computer or laptop on. The television should now act as your computer monitor.

  • Allow the computer to boot up. Open your web browser and go to YouTube.com. Click into the search bar and type what video you want to see. Click on the "Search" button.

  • Click on the play button. The video will play on your television.

Television Without VGA Input

  • Inspect the back of your television to determine what type of video inputs you have. Component inputs have three colors (red, blue, and green) and composite inputs have one color (yellow).

  • Place the computer near the television, attach the VGA cord to the video out port and the speaker cables into the audio out ports, and connect your Internet cables.

  • Insert the other end of the VGA cable into the VGA input on the video converter box. Insert whatever cables you need (component or composite) into their respective video outputs on the converter box and then into the television.

  • Turn the television on and set it to display the video input from the converter box. Follow the instructions in the television manual to change the display settings.

  • Turn on the computer or laptop, which will now use the television as its display. When the computer boots up, open up your web browser and go to YouTube.com. Search for the video you want to watch and click play.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a wireless connection, you will need a wireless card. If your laptop or computer doesn't have an internal wireless card, you will need to purchase one.
  • If you are using a laptop, you may need to go into your display settings and "extend" your laptop display to the television.
