Choosing an effective name for your business is a big step on the road to success in South Carolina, and everywhere. You will be connected with this name for many years, hopefully, so take time to pick the right one. Once you decide on a name for your business, most states, including South Carolina, require that you register it with the state.
Visit South Carolina Business One Stop at scbos.sc.gov, and select "Login" found in the upper right-hand corner. If you're a returning user, enter your user name and password. If you're a new user, click "Create a new SCBOS user account" to set up an account.
Choose a user name and password, and enter your contact information when prompted to set up a new account. Once your account is opened, log in by entering the user name and password created.
Click on either "Start New Business" or "Add Existing Business." If you haven't yet created your business, choose the first option. If your business is established, choose the second option.
Enter the information about your business in the application's fields when prompted. Be as accurate as possible; once submitted, the information will be used by the state to identify your business.
Click "Licenses/Permits/Registrations" after you submit your application. This will allow you to register your new or existing business as an LLC, a sole proprietorship or a nonprofit corporation. Provide your business name, location, contact information and number of employees, if any, in the appropriate areas.
