How to Dispose of Used Car Oil in Maine

How to Dispose of Used Car Oil in Maine thumbnail
Recycling oil helps preserve the environment.

You finished changing your car's oil and now you must decide what to do with the used oil. A quick thought may be to trash it. However, throwing used motor oil into the trash, even in a sealed container, may harm the environment. The oil may leak and find its way into rivers or ground water supplies. Recycled oil, on the other hand, fuels furnaces, power plants and other things. In Maine, take your used to a Maine Oil Recycling Center.

Drain your oil into a plastic container. Maine.gov suggests using an empty bleach bottle. Whichever plastic container you choose, make sure it is non-breakable and closeable.

    • 2

Locate a Maine Oil Recycling Center. Many body shops and auto repair shops in your area may be able to dispose of your used oil. You can also call Maine's Department of Environmental Protection for help at 207-287-2651.
Contact recycling centers near you to check whether they charge fees or if they have quantity limits. Some centers accept two gallons at no charge; others may charge for the service.

    • 3

Take your used oil to your nearest Maine Oil Recycling Center.

    • 4

Tell the clerk at the Maine Oil Recycling Center you want to dispose of the used oil. The clerk will take care of the oil for you. Wait for the clerk to finish disposing of the oil so you can take your plastic container with you. Save the plastic container for your next oil change.
