How to Change the Signal Light Bulbs on a 1996 Lincoln
When you discover that you've got a blown turn signal bulb in your 1996 Lincoln, you'd be smart to replace the bulb as soon as possible, for your safety as well as to avoid a traffic ticket. Replacing the signal light bulbs on these older Lincolns isn't the easiest job in the world, but no tools are required and you should be able to take care of this on your own in just a few minutes. Before you begin, ensure that the turn signals are in the "off" position.

1
Open the hood of the Lincoln, and locate the plastic shield covering the back of the headlight assembly. Lift up on the back corners of the shield to detach the Velcro fastener. Lift the shield out of the way.
-
2
Lift up the two brackets by hand to release the headlight assembly. Pull the assembly up, which will reveal the back of the turn signal bulb.
-
-
3
Disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the turn signal bulb by tugging it with your hand.
-
4
Turn the retaining ring 1/8 of a revolution counterclockwise by hand to dislodge it from the socket. Take the ring off the base of the turn signal bulb. Pull the bulb assembly backward without turning to separate it from its socket.
-
5
Insert the glass end of the replacement turn signal bulb into the socket. The flat side of the base of the bulb should point face upward, with the grooves in the base aligned properly with the tabs in the socket. With your hand, push the replacement turn signal bulb into the socket until the base touches the back of the socket.
-
6
Place the retaining ring you removed earlier over the base of the new turn signal bulb, and slide the ring down until it touches the back of the socket. Turn the ring clockwise until it locks into the socket.
-
7
Snap the wiring harness together with the back of the base so that it locks into position.
-
8
Grasp the headlight assembly by hand and lower it back down so that the alignment pins are properly situated in the holes.
-
9
Push the headlight assembly down onto the two brackets until it locks into place again.
-
10
Reinstall the plastic shield on the back of the headlight assembly by refastening the Velcro snaps, and close the hood of the Lincoln before testing the bulbs.
