How to Attach a License Plate With Security Screws

Having a license plate stolen can be a huge hassle. Paying for the replacement plate, standing in line at the DMV and then re-installing it on your car are just things that you'd rather not have to do.

Things You'll Need

• Security screws
• Security screw removal tool
• License plate

Instructions

1. Hold the license plate firmly against the car's license plate holder.

2. Insert the security screws into the holes on the license plate, ensuring that you go straight through the license plate and into the holes on the license plate holder.

3. Rotate the screws clockwise with your fingers until you can't turn anymore.

4. Tighten the screws the rest of the way with the removal tool that came with the screws. Be careful not to over-tighten, as you may strip the head of the screw, or break the head off completely.

5. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the second license plate if your state requires a back and front plate.

Tips & Warnings

• Security screws are a great way to protect your license plate from the common thief. The thing that makes these screws harder to remove is their odd-shaped head. With odd indentations on the head of the screw, these can't be removed with common screwdrivers. If someone has a tool that matches the head, these screws can be removed. With dozens, or hundreds of different models of security screws, the chances of this happening are slim, but possible.
