How to Identify a Jeep Cherokee Rear End

Save

The Jeep Cherokee is a rugged vehicle that combines a modicum of interior comfort with the ability to climb steep trails and rough terrain. Being able to spot a Jeep Cherokee is helpful when shopping for a new vehicle or when trying to determine the make of a car while on the road. Identifying a Cherokee rear end is also useful when searching for a lost person that may have driven said vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • pictorial guide to the Jeep Cherokee.
  • Note the silhouette of the rear of the vehicle. A Cherokee's top is virtually squared off and tapers only a little bit from the widest part of the SUV's slab sides. A nearly square rear silhouette is a Jeep Cherokee trademark.

  • Examine the taillights. A Jeep Cherokee's taillights have a distinctive, rectangular shape. The white reverse light is located between two red taillights--the brake lights and the parking or running lights. Look from directly behind the vehicle to note the parallel property of the lights as they sit, squaring the frame from the bumper to the rear windshield.

  • Locate the license plate section in the lower center of the rear hatch. Just above this section on a Jeep Cherokee is a thick, silver-toned bar that extends horizontally across the middle of the hatch. Notice on the Jeep Cherokee, the Jeep logo written in silver standard lettering on the center of said bar.

  • View the bumper. Note the sloping fashion of the corners of the rear bumper as it levels off into a straight edge. See the rubber coating that protects the upper surface of the bumper from wear and tear. Look underneath the center of the bumper to identify the squared latch for towing.

  • Note whether there's a luggage rack on the roof. Look above the virtually vertical rear windshield to see the standard luggage rack on the roof, if it's a Jeep Cherokee. See the thin wire antenna that is positioned near the rear of the Jeep Cherokee's roof. Notice whether the option of a sun roof has been chosen. The Cherokee sun roof folds back into a fanning, ruffled manner that is visible from behind.
