How to Install Spark Plug Wires on a 2000 Dodge Durango

Spark plug wires wear down in time, and breaks in the wire or other damage may occur. When damaged, the wires are unable to send the electrical current to the spark plug needed to create the spark that ignites the fuel in your engine. This can lead to misfires or other performance issues with your engine. You can return your 2000 Dodge Durango's engine to regular performance by changing the spark plug wires every 30,000-50,000 miles or sooner if the wires are damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Durango on a flat surface and engage the emergency brake.

    • 2

Remove the negative battery cable from the battery as a safety precaution, since you're working on the electrical system.

    • 3

Find the spark plug wires within the engine compartment. The wires run from the engine to the distributor cap and have a thick rubber outer shell.

    • 4

Pull one of the wires off of a spark plug in the engine. Make sure you grab the boot of the spark plug wire and not the wire itself. If you find it difficult to take off, twist the boot to the right and left while pulling. You may want to use a spark plug wire removal tool to help pull stuck wires.

    • 5

Take off any retaining clips that secure the spark plug wire inside the engine compartment.

    • 6

Run your hand along the wire to trace it to the distributor cap and remove the opposite end boot using the method described in Step 3.

    • 7

Locate the spark plug wire that matches in size the spark plug wire you removed from the engine, and then discard the old wire.

    • 8

Coat the inside of both ends of the boot with dielectric grease to help prevent corrosion. You only need to use a small amount.

    • 9

Secure one end of the spark plug wire to the open terminal on the distributor cap and the other end to the open spark plug.

    • 10

Attach any of the spark plug wire retaining clips.

    • 11

Repeat Steps 4 through 10 for the remaining wires.
