How to Become an Ordained Minister in Illinois

Now more than ever, people outside of traditional clergy are becoming ordained ministers. In many states, an ordained minister is able to legally perform wedding ceremonies, baptisms, funerals, and other typically religious ceremonies for family, friends, and the wider community. Many of these new ministers become easily and inexpensively ordained online, resulting in the opportunity to play an important role in a family's celebration as well as possibly earning some extra money.

Instructions

1. 

   Spend as much time researching the organization as possible.

   Do your research. There are hundreds of churches, religious organizations, and non-religious organizations that offer online ordination. Some also offer online minister training courses prior to ordination. Search for an organization that is most in line with your personal or religious philosophy. Spend as much time researching churches/organizations of interest as possible prior to choosing one.

2. 

   Making a phone call can cement your decision.

   Choose the church or organization that is right for you. Thoroughly read the requirements for becoming ordained. If you have questions or would like to get a better feel for the organization, call them prior to beginning the application process.

3. 

   Some churches will supply you with a valid identification card.

   Complete the application. Many churches/organizations only require your name, address, and your agreement to their code of ethics. Others will ask you to submit an essay describing anything from biographical information to your calling to the ministry. In some cases, you may have to consent to a criminal background check. Some applications have no fees whatsoever, while others charge a nominal amount ($25 to $100) and provide you with an ID card.

4. 

   Processing time is usually short.

   Wait. Processing an application typically takes between two and four weeks. Depending on the specific type of ordination, you may receive an ID card and/or an officially sealed certificate of ordination in the mail.

Tips & Warnings

• Higher fees usually indicate an online course in addition to ordination. If your goal is to simply become ordained, make sure that's all you are paying for.

• Although it is currently legal for a minister who has been ordained online to perform wedding ceremonies in Illinois, it is always wise and recommended to ask the county where the wedding is being held if it is legal for a minister who does not have a congregation to perform a wedding there. Wedding licensing is by county in every state, and a wedding is the only legal ceremony a minister performs.
