How to Change the Mailing Address for Franchise Tax
The Franchise Tax Board is the department that handles all tax collections for California. The department was created in 1929 to help collect taxes that would go into the state's general fund. The Franchise Tax board processes more than $50 million in tax revenue. To correctly pay your taxes, you must have a correct address on file with the board. If you move, you will need to change your address within that tax year.
Things You'll Need
- Personal tax return
- Estimate voucher (Form 540-ES)
- Change of address form (Form FTB 3533)

Fill out your personal tax return for California with your correct new address. The board will update the address it has for you with the new address on the return.

Fill out form 540-ES if you owe taxes and place your new address on the form. This is particularly important if you move in between the period between April 15 and June 15 in any tax year and you owe money. The tax board will update the new information to get your account current.

Fill out the FTB 3533 if you need to receive periodic information from the Franchise Tax Board or have moved before your refund has come through. Send the form to: Franchise Tax Board, P.O. Box 92840, Sacramento, CA 94240.

Tips & Warnings
If you move to a new address midway through the year and are are not expecting a refund nor do you have a payment due, wait to fill out the new address when its time to file your taxes. You do not need to update your address each time.
