How to Get Garmin Unlock Codes
When you purchase a Garmin mapping product in the form of a CD or DVD, or when you purchase a new Garmin GPS device that comes with a mapping product to be installed, Garmin also sends you an eight- or seven-digit unlock coupon that entitles you to one unlock code to unlock the map product to your Garmin GPS unit. Garmin does this to prevent others from copying these map products without paying for them. Once you have your unlock coupon (also used as your Garmin Customer Code), you can go to your Garmin online account and get an unlock code.

Go to garmin.com and log into myGarmin account. If you don't have a Garmin account, create one and register the products (Garmin GPS devices and map products) you purchased.

Plug the small end of the Garmin USB data cable to the back or side of the Garmin GPS device. Connect the other end of the cable to a free USB port in your computer. If you haven't downloaded the Garmin communicator plugin, Garmin will prompt you to do so. Follow the instructions for downloading this free software.

Click the "myMaps" tab on the top of the page and select "Manage Maps."

Select the product name that needs an unlock code and click the "Details " button.

Choose "Unlock" from the product table on the right. Garmin redirects you to their "Unlock Wizard."

Click on the "Unit ID" for which you want to unlock the map and enter the unlock coupon number that came with the map product. Garmin generates a 25-digit unlock code that you use to unlock this map product for the Garmin GPS device you chose.

Tips & Warnings
You can purchase additional unlock codes if you own more than one Garmin GPS device and wish to download a map product to more than one device.
