Ask any TiVo owner what he likes about the digital video recording device, and you'll likely get a list of accolades. Topping most lists likely is a two-word response: no commercials. With a little help from third-party software, TiVo transforms your media room into an ad-free zone. There is a TiVo hack that allows you to skip 30 seconds ahead, the length of a normal commercial. But that hack doesn't actually remove the commercials. The software solution provides a true commercial-free viewing experience.
Things You'll Need
- Tivo (Series 2 or later)
- VideoReDo Plus software
- PC networked with Tivo
Sign into your TiVo account on the TiVo website. Click on "Change DVR Preferences" and then check the "Allow Tansfers" box. This will allow you to transfer your recorded programs from your TiVo to your PC. If you have already done this, you can skip to Step 2. This change could take 24 hours to go into effect.
Install the VideoReDo software on your PC. Although the software cost $49.99 as of March 2010, a free trial is available. During install, the software will ask "Will you be opening TiVo to Go programs?" Answer "Yes".
Ensure TiVo is connected to your home network. If you haven't yet connected TiVo to you home network, TiVo offers a user-friendly installation guide. The software is available for both Macs and PCs.
Open the TiVo desktop software on your PC. If you haven't installed this yet, download it from the TiVo website. It is free for TiVo customers.
Choose "Pick Recordings to Transfer." All of your TiVo recorded programs will be listed. Select one of them and click "Start Transfer." Depending on your network speed, this process can take up to one hour to complete.
Open VideoReDo after your transfer is complete. Click the "Open Video" button. Select your TiVo program.
Under "Ad-Detective," select "Start Scan". VideoReDo will begin looking for commercials and mark them for removal.
Click the yellow "Film Strip" button. VideoReDo will play your video without commercials. If you're happy with the result, save the edited program.
Tips & Warnings
- Record your TiVo programs at a lower quality. You will be able to fit more programs onto your hard drive.
- Editing is not an exact science. Preview your edited program before saving it. If it isn't perfect, use VideoReDo to edit the program manually.
