How to Perform a Trigger Point Injection

Trigger points are tight bundles of muscles, which cause widespread pain, muscle weakness and may twitch in reaction to pressure. They are mostly associated with myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. Trigger point injections have been found to be one of the most effective treatments for the condition, particularly when used in conjunction with exercise, heat and other therapy, and medication.

Things You'll Need

• Alcohol pads
• 3 or 5 mL syringe with lidocaine or procaine
• 22, 25 or 27 gauge needles

Instructions

How to Perform a Trigger Point Injection

1. Place patient in a comfortable position, locate trigger point and cleanse the area with alcohol pad.

2. Insert the needle one to two centimeters away from the trigger point, and with your fingers, apply pressure at either side of the injection site and inject at a 30-degree angle.

3. Re-insert needle in every direction around the trigger point, until the twitch response has stopped.

4. Repeat the procedure for other trigger points, usually stopping at about ten or less points, to minimize pain.

5. Apply pressure for two minutes and apply adhesive bandage.

Tips & Warnings

• Instruct patient to watch out for signs of infection, such as redness and fever following the injections, and to call if these occur.
