How to Cut Templates for Quilting

Templates are used when cutting the fabric which is pieced together to make quilts. Quilters use templates made from paper, cardboard, plastic and even metal. The better the material the template is made from, the longer it will last. It is worth buying the tools and materials necessary to create quality templates that can be used for making heirloom quilts.

Things You'll Need

• Acrylic plastic
• Rotary cutter
• Rotary board

Instructions

1. Prepare your work surface by laying out your rotary board and rotary cutter.

2. Lay the piece of acrylic plastic on top of the rotary board.

3. Lay the template on top of the acrylic plastic, ensuring that it fits.

4. Hold the template securely with one hand while moving slowly and carefully with the rotary cutter around the design.

5. Clean up the excess and your template is now ready for years of use.

Tips & Warnings

• Acrylic plastic templates will last years compared with cardboard or paper, which will wear out after one or two quilts. All the quilting materials can be bought at a craft store or online.

• Always use rotary cutters on a rotary board. It is made of thick, rubbery material that can withstand the rotary cutters and not slide around while in use. Other surfaces would be cut and marred by the sharp rotary blade.
