How to Decorate Milk Crates

Save

Milk crates, whether wood or plastic, can be used for storage or even makeshift home decor if you spruce them up. Decorate old milk crates to be useful and functional in your bedroom, closet, kids' rooms, home office, hobby rooms, garage or anywhere else they may serve a purpose. Get creative with your decorations and disguise the milk crates as an ingenious part of your decor.

Things You'll Need

  • Milk crates
  • Fabric
  • Wallpaper
  • Thick poster board/cut-to-size plywood
  • Scissors
  • Tape/glue/fabric glue
  • Determine how you want to use the crates. Stack them like a shelf or turn them on their sides to use for storage and tables. The way you intend to use them and where you want them will largely affect the way you decorate them.

  • Reinforce the crates and cover any holes or slats by lining the bottom of them with thick poster board or cut-to-size plywood. This will help provide a flat, sturdy surface to hold books, knickknacks or other items in place.

  • Add the reinforcements in between crates, as well, if you're stacking them. This will help keep them sturdy by giving each crate a flat surface to sit on. Another option is to use zip ties to hold them together. Simply secure each corner with a zip tie and cut off the excess material. If you need to unstack them, cut the zip ties and rearrange them as necessary.

  • Cover the tops, insides and sides of the crates with fabric, wallpaper or decorative paper, such as scrapbook paper. Glue or tape paper decorations, such as wallpaper or scrapbook paper, inside of or on top of the crates. If you're using fabric, manipulate the fabric to cover the parts of the crates you don't want visible and hold it in place with fabric glue, Velcro or safety pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use fabric or paper that complements the room's existing decor.
  • Don't steal milk crates from behind stores. Instead, ask for used crates or purchase them from flea markets or second-hand stores. They're typically inexpensive, and sometimes free.
