First things first: You need to check your computer settings. Go to the Start Menu - Control Panel - Printers and Faxes. Once there right click on your printer and hit "Printing Preferences." We're going to ensure you're using the most frugal settings available!

Under your printing preferences check General Everyday Printing or even Fast Economical Printing. Check "apply." Then, ensure that under the "Colors" tab you check the "Print in Grayscale" tab. If you really need nicer printing, check the "High Quality" option but for me the black and white is generally fine.

Ok, your printer is all set up. Now a couple of extras to watch. Firstly, it's time to change your fonts. According to a study this helps you save money too. Every time you create a document, make sure your default font is set to one of these that take up less ink: Century Gothic, Times New Roman, Calibri, Verdana, Arial or Sans Serif.

If it doesn't matter on the size, go under "settings" and set it up to print 2-up or the equivalent of 2 pages per sheet of paper. Documents are half the size they would otherwise be, but you're saving money :>)

Finally, before you click the "Print" button consider: Do you really need this document? Sometimes we get too clicky and print unnecessary items when we could be saving our ink for something else.

    Tips & Warnings

    • What you don't print is helping the planet. To help even more, don't forget to recycle printed paper. The back of it is great for little hands to color on!
