How to Send & Receive Text Messages From a PC to a Cell Phone
According to a 2008 CBS News article, people send more text messages than make phone calls. The report notes that Short Message Service (SMS) became popular in Asia and Europe initially, because sending short messages was cheaper than making phone calls. Another way to use this inexpensive messaging method is to send text messages from a PC to a cell phone. Although not all phone carriers offer texting to computers, sending and receiving texts from computer to cell is just as easy as using email or standard text messaging.

1
Open a web browser on your computer and navigate to your email service. Create a new email.
-
2
Enter the cell phone number followed by the phone carrier's suffix into the “To:” section. Do not include hyphens or parentheses. For example, a message to a Verizon phone would appear as “5551234321@vtext.com.” The suffix for AT&T is "@txt.att.net" while T-Mobile's suffix is "@tmomail.net." For other carriers, see the Tech Recipes link in Resources.

3
Type your message in the email message space. Keep in mind that most SMS messages allow up to 160 characters. Messages with more than 160 characters will be broken into separate text messages. Hit “Send.”

Receive a text message from a PC to a cell phone as you would any regular text message. Navigate to the phone's message center and open the Inbox to view the message.
