2. Take a look at Windows Media Center. This software package, which comes with most versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, allows you to record TV shows using your computer. Note that you may need to install a third party TV capture card that allows you to connect your computer to your cable box.

3. See if your TV cable box includes a recording function. Many TV service providers now offer cable boxes that have a built in record feature, so no additional software or hardware is necessary. Even if you have an older box, you may be able to get a free or discounted upgrade by calling you TV provider.
