How to Retrieve My Outlook Express Emails

Outlook Express--Microsoft’s email and newsgroup program--provides access to online email services. The program works by retrieving email messages from a specified email address. You can set up more than one email account to retrieve multiple account messages. In addition, the send and receive feature automatically downloads new messages. Outlook Express requires you to complete a set-up process to retrieve emails.

  • Collect required account information and open Outlook Express. Retrieve the following information from your Internet Service Provider or email account company: type of email (POP3, IMAP or HTTP), incoming and outgoing email servers, your password and account name, and secure password authentication information. Start Outlook Express by double-clicking the icon on your desktop or selecting the program from the “All Programs” menu.

  • Add an email account. Click “Tools,” then click “Accounts” on the Tools menu. Click “Add,” then click “Mail.” Enter your name as you want it to appear to recipients of your email messages in the “Your Name” text box. Click “Next.” This brings you to the “Internet E-mail Address” page.

  • Enter your email address on the "Internet E-mail Address" page and click "Next." Enter your email provider's incoming mail server in the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP)" text box. Enter your email provider's outgoing mail server information in the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" text box and click "Next."

  • Enter the account name and password for your account. Click “Next” and then “Finish.” Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for any additional email addresses.

  • Open your inbox. Once you have completed the initial set up, Outlook Express will download your email to your desktop by way of your inbox. Click “Inbox” in the “Folders” portion of the Outlook Express screen. Outlook Express lists each email received.

  • Open your email. You can click an email to preview the message in the preview pane. You can also double-click a message to view the message in a new window.

  • Send and receive email. Click “Tools” on the menu bar and point to “Send and Receive.” Click “Receive all,” and Outlook Express automatically retrieves email on your service provider's server.
