Save

Fillable forms are a common way to compile information from end users for a variety of reasons including registrations and membership applications. These interactive forms can have various fields and action buttons, such as those designed to be returned to the author. With the right software, you can create a fillable form for email that can be sent back to you by following a few steps.

Things You'll Need

  • PDF writing program

Use a Commercial PDF Writing Program

  • Install a commercial PDF writing application to your computer. While many PDF writing programs contain forms tools, you need to download one that has a “button” feature to allow end users to email the form back to a specified address. Adobe Acrobat Pro, which is used in the following steps, has this specific forms feature. Because Acrobat Pro is an expensive program, consider trying the free trial from the Adobe Systems web site.

  • Open a PDF file for which you want to create a fillable form. Click once on the “File” menu and once on the “Open” option. Select the folder in which the PDF file is saved using the “Look in” menu and double click on the file name to launch it. Because the Acrobat products do not allow for free-form creation of a PDF file, you will need to create one with a source program, such as Microsoft Word. Consider creating the text portion of the form with Word and saving the document as a PDF file.

  • Access the “Forms” toolbar in Acrobat. Use the “Tools” menu to select the “Forms” option and click once on the “Show Forms Toolbar” listing. The “Forms” toolbar, which contains all of the available form field tools, will open near the standard toolbar. Add form fields as necessary to your document to create your fillable forms. All of the forms tools operate in the same basic manner. Click once on a tool icon. Click once in an area of the document where you want to add a field and drag to a desired size while holding down the mouse button. After the mouse button is released, use the “Properties” window to adjust the appearance of the field.

  • Add a button to allow the form to be returned in an email. Click once on the “Button Tool” icon and follow the directions for adding the field from Step 3. Select the “Actions” tab from the “Properties” menu. Click once on the “Add” button after selecting “Submit a Form” from the “Select Action” menu. Click once on the “Complete Document” option. In the URL field, type “mailto:” followed by the email address to which you want the fillable form returned, for example, mailto:janedoe@email.com. Click once on the “OK” button and then once on the “Close” button. Remember to save the form using the “Save As” option under the “File” menu.
