How to Shoot a Rifle With a Sling
A sling is most commonly thought of as a means to carry a gun while in the field. However, a well-designed sling can also provide a steady support for shooting a rifle from the standing position. Made from materials such as nylon and leather, slings are available in various designs from a number of manufacturers. Learning to correctly use a sling can help provide the support you need for a shot when a sitting or prone shot is not possible.

1
Hold the rifle with your dominant hand. Position your dominant hand around the grip of the stock that is located just behind the receiver of the rifle.
-
2
Insert your opposite hand between the rifle and sling. If you are right-handed, insert your left hand through the sling, and vice versa.
-
-
3
Weave your hand and arm back around and inside the sling until the sling makes contact with your bicep or upper arm.
-
4
Grip the forearm of the rifle with your hand while continuing to hold the grip of the rifle with your dominant hand.
-
5
Raise the rifle so that the stock is positioned firmly against your shoulder. Apply slight downward pressure with your arm against the sling to steady the rifle for shooting.
-
6
Position your cheek just above the stock of the rifle and sight down the barrel. Align the rear sight and front sight with the target. Place the finger of your dominant hand on the trigger and gently squeeze to fire a shot.
