Shoot a 4-Meter (Foul) Shot in Water Polo

Shoot a free foul shot from the 4-meter line in a single, quick motion.

From Quick Guide: Water Polo
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water Polo Balls
  • Water polo balls
  1. Step 1

Set yourself at the 4-meter line in front of the opposing team's cage. This is a free foul shot, so don't worry about the defense other than the goalie.

  2. Step 2

Decide beforehand where you are going to shoot, but don't look there or do anything to project to the goalie where that might be. If anything, look at the opposite side. Silly head games between you and the goalie may come into play here, but if your shot is good, none of it matters much.

  3. Step 3

Hold the ball in a comfortable position, ready to shoot.

  4. Step 4

Watch the referee for the signal.

  5. Step 5

Lift up the ball and shoot when the referee blows the whistle. Aim for an upper corner. Shoot hard and quick.

  6. Step 6

Be ready to chase your shot. On a block or a bar hit against the cage, you are usually the closest player to the rebound.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may not pump fake at all on a 4-meter penalty shot.
  • Your shot must be a single unbroken motion from the time the referee blows the whistle. If you are holding the ball behind your head in a cocked and ready position, fire straightaway. However, if you wish, you may hold the ball in front of you and carry it back and then shoot. This gives you a chance to watch the goalie dive to one side or the other, but it also gives the goalie a second to prepare for your shot.
