How to Make a Futon Mattress More Comfortable

Originating in Japan, a futon traditionally has two parts: the bed and the comforter. The Japanese lay their bed on the floor on a mat, then fold it up and store it during the day. Over time, futons in the states have taken a different form—placed on a frame that can fold into a couch for sitting and down into a bed for sleeping. There are different ways that you can make a futon more comfortable. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use a futon mattress made of polyester and high-density foam. This type of mattress will be flexible and durable. It has the ability to bounce back into shape from regular use, so the mattress stays comfortable. Cotton mattresses tend show lack of resilience, depleting in thickness over time. Some mattresses have an inner-spring system, but unless it is a high-quality mattress, it too will wear out quickly.

A 6-inch thick mattress is sufficient for use as a guest bed. A 9-inch thick mattress should be used if the futon is going to be a nightly bed for an indefinite period.

Use a mattress pad. Not only will it help keep your futon mattress clean, it also will add softness. There are quilted cotton mattress pads, but an egg crate foam pad will give you the most comfort for your dollar spent.

    • 3

Add a mattress topper. Mattress toppers are similar to pads, but they tend to be softer and thicker than a pad. Mattress toppers can be made of several different fillers. There are down fillers, cotton and wool. A mattress pad can also be made of foam. Foam typically lasts the longest, followed by cotton and wool fillers.

Use a down or synthetic down comforter to add plush softness to your futon. Down, made from feathers, or synthetic down comforters will add warmth and thickness to your bedding.
