A proxy server is a computer system or program that functions as a mediator between multiple systems. A proxy helps computers run more smoothly by streamlining computer communications and improving efficiency. If your proxy starts malfunctioning, a virus or spyware could be to blame. You can detect your proxy settings as well as any spyware programs on your computer fairly easily.

• Anti-spyware program

Instructions

1. Open your anti-spyware program and make sure it is updated.

2. Scan your hard drive with the anti-spyware program. Delete any flagged files and restart your computer.

3. Open your Internet browser. Go to your "Options" folder. It should be located in the "Tools" menu. Click on "Advanced." You should see a Connection option. Click on its "Settings" button.

4. Click on "Auto-detect Proxy Settings" to detect the settings of your proxy server.
