Instructions

    • 1

Call or visit your city or county government offices to find out if there are any ordinances or restrictions related to metal detecting.

    • 2

Lay an assortment of metal objects, such as a gold ring, a bottle cap, a hairpin and a silver ring on a table or the floor. Move the metal detector over the different metals, paying particular attention to the sound it makes when you slowly pass it over a silver object. Repeat this as many times as you need to until you remember the sound.

    • 3

Research the area in which you live. You may be surprised to find out what was there before all the concrete and buildings. Pick an area that you believe may have some hidden treasure such as a park, a river or an old battlefield.

    • 4

Plan to visit a popular beach at low tide if you don't live near one. Beaches are a favorite place of many metal detector hobbyists to locate silver and other buried treasures. Comb the beach with your metal detector at dawn or dusk when there are fewer crowds.

    • 5

Sweep the metal detector slowly over the area you're searching. Keep track of the areas you've previously searched. Focus on the sound that the detector will make if you come upon silver. Be patient and take your time; you don't want to miss any treasure.
