How to Change the Speed of a Gas Furnace Fan

Gas furnace fans can almost always be completely controlled with the thermostat. The majority of furnaces use the lower speeds for heating and the high speeds for cooling. In some rare instances, the fan's speed will not respond to a simple thermostat adjustment and has to be adjusted manually.

  • Access the furnace. Open the area where the furnace is located and turn on a light so that you can clearly see the entire furnace.

  • Open the panel on the furnace. Remove the small screws on the panel. If there are no screws, just pull the panel off.

  • Change the speed of the furnace. On the inside of the panel find the central control board and adjust the speed up or down with the speed dial.

  • Switch the setting on the thermostat. On some furnaces you will be able to increase the fan speed by changing the thermostat from "auto" to "on." This will cause the fan to run at a higher speed.
