How to Remove Auto Glass Tinting

Automotive glass tint film adheres to glass with a very strong glue. The film is actually two layers: a shade layer and a firmer glue layer. When removing the film from the glass, it is important to get both layers, as the glue layer is typically clear and hard to see. The glue will dissolve with the use of a powerful ammonia-based cleaner. The average backyard tint technician can remove the tint film from a window in about 40 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the tint film with a liberal dose of ammonia cleaner and allow it to sit for a minute to soak. Spray the edges well; the ammonia cleaner will seep into the edges and dissolve the glue quicker. Once the ammonia has set for a minute, spray the tint film again to completely saturate it.

Work the razor blade into the corner of the tint film. Spray more ammonia, then continue to push the blade underneath both layers of tint film. Keep working the razor and spraying ammonia until a large section of the tint film begins to lift from the glass. Do not pull the film and try to hurry the job. Simply spray more ammonia and work the razor to remove the tint film slowly. Ripping up the tab will leave the glue layer, and it can be difficult to scrape off later.

With the tint film removed, spray an ample amount of ammonia onto the glass to remove any latent glue particles. Scrape larger glue chunks off with the razor blade.

    • 4

Rinse the window with water and dry it with a lint-free towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the tint rips, use the razor blade to start a new tab on the ripped edge.

  • Only remove tint and use ammonia in a well-ventilated location.
