How to Paint a Rug on a Concrete Patio
A painted rug on a concrete patio can last for years if it the concrete is properly prepared and a quality polyurethane is applied over the paint. Cleaning a faux-painted rug is as simple as spraying the patio down with a garden hose occasionally to remove dirt. You can perform this do-it-yourself project even if you lack artistic ability with the use of stencils purchased from craft or home improvement stores. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Broom
- White vinegar
- Mop bucket
- Water
- Mop
- Blue painter's tape
- Concrete paint
- Paint roller
- Paint brush
- Stencils
- Water-based polyurethane

Sweep the patio with a broom to remove any dirt from the surface you are about to paint.

Mix approximately 1 cup of white vinegar into a mop bucket full of water. Mop the patio with the vinegar and water mixture to remove any greasy residue or remaining dirt. Use a hose to rinse away the vinegar when you are done.

Apply blue painter's tape to the patio to outline the rug you wish to create. Smooth down the edges of the tape to prevent paint from leaking underneath the tape during painting.

Paint the area inside the tape with concrete paint using a paint roller. Concrete paint is available at most paint and home improvement stores. This paint can be tinted in any color you wish.

Let the paint dry for approximately one hour and then carefully remove the tape. Let the paint dry overnight before you attempt to add details to the rug.

Paint details on the rug using a paint brush and additional colors of concrete paint. You can use stencils or freehand the designs of your choice. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Apply three coats of water-based polyurethane to the top of the painted rug to protect the paint. Let each coat of polyurethane dry completely before you apply the next coat.
