How to Make a Computer Invisible to Hackers
Computers are hacked into everyday, leaving owners, businesses, and organizations in a state of panic. Hackers break into a computer with the intention of leaving a mark of their work by destroying or stealing something of value to you -- your personal information and data. To prevent hackers from gaining access to your computer, a firewall can be installed. Firewalls render your computer invisible to hackers and their attacks. No matter what operating system you are using, it's important to protect your computer.

1
Turn on built-in Firewall (Windows Computers). Windows computers come prepackaged with a firewall. It is turned off by default. To turn it on, click "Start" and then select "Control Panel." Click the "Windows Firewall" icon. Next to "Windows Firewall is," click the "Change settings" link. Select the "On" radial button, click "Apply" and then "OK."

Download and install an anti-virus/firewall product. It's highly recommended to have an anti-virus program running to protect your computer from viruses. Norton, McAfee and AVG offer trusted high security anti-virus programs that often come packaged with a firewall. If you choose to use one of these products as your anti-virus and firewall, you do not need to enable the Windows built-in firewall. Running multiple firewalls is redundant, provides no extra security, and can actually be counterproductive.

Disconnect your computer from the Internet when not using it. The only sure way to make your computer invisible to hackers is to turn off access completely. Although firewalls are very strong, they are not completely foolproof. However, it's very unlikely that a hacker will take the time to try to crack the firewall of your one personal computer.
