How to Install Active Directory on Windows XP

The Active Directory tool can be manually installed in Windows XP.

The Active Directory Users and Groups control panel utility is a very helpful tool for system administrators, as it allows them to add, delete and modify accounts on their network directory. However, the Active Directory utility is only installed by default on the Windows Server operating system. If you want to use the tool in Windows XP, you need to manually install it through the Microsoft Management Console.

Things You'll Need

• PC running Windows XP or later

Instructions

1. Log on to your PC computer with an administrator account and open the Start menu and click on the "Run" icon.

2. Type "mmc" into the dialog box and then hit the "Enter" key. The Microsoft Management Console utility will now launch.

3. Go to "File" in the top menu bar and select "Add/Remove Snap-in."

4. Click on the "Add" button at the bottom of the pop-up window.

5. Highlight "Active Directory Users and Computers" from the list of available tools and hit "Add."

6. Press the "Close" button and then click "OK."

7. Restart your PC computer. When the computer reboots, the Active Directory tool will be found in the "Administrative Tools" folder in the Control Panel window.
