How Can You Autoplay a Shockwave Flash?

How Can You Autoplay a Shockwave Flash? thumbnail
Set Flash autoplay in the host document.

Adobe Flash is the program of choice for most animation and interactive application designers. Typically, Flash SWF movies are designed to play inside "host" documents, such as PDFs and Word files. Autoplay---the movie starts playing automatically when the page in which it's embedded displays---is usually controlled by the host document, rather than the Flash movie itself. In PDFs, for example, you set the movie to autoplay while embedding it with Acrobat Pro's Flash Tool. In Word, autoplay is set from the Shockwave Flash Object's Properties dialog box.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Setting Autoplay in PDFs

    • 1

Open the PDF in which you want to embed and autoplay a movie in Acrobat Pro. Click "File" on the menu bar and choose "Open" to display the Open dialog box. Navigate to the PDF, select it, and then click the "Open" button.

    • 2

Go to the page where you want to embed the movie. Acrobat's "Page Navigation" controls are on the left side of the Toolbar.

    • 3

Click "Tools" on the menu bar and choose "Multimedia," and then select "Flash Tool" from the Multimedia fly-out menu. Click and drag on the page were you want the movie to display to draw a Flash object control box. This opens the "Insert Flash" dialog box.

    • 4

Click the "Browse" button to display the "Select a File" dialog box. Navigate to the SWF, select it and click the "Open" button. Click the "Show Advanced Options" check box at the bottom of the Insert Flash dialog box to expand the dialog box to display advanced options.

    • 5

Click the "Launch Settings" tab. Click the "Enable When" drop-down and choose "The page containing the content is opened." Click "OK." The movie will now autoplay when the page containing it is opened.

    Setting Autoplay in Word

    • 6

Open the Word document in which you want to autoplay a movie in Word. Click the "Office Button" (Office icon in the upper-left corner of the application window). Select "Open" to display the Open dialog box. Navigate to the Word file, select it, and then click the "Open" button.

    • 7

Go to the page where you want to embed the movie, and then click to insert the cursor where you want movie to display. Click the "Developer" tab at the top of the application window. Click the "Legacy Controls" button (the fourth button in the second row) in the "Controls" section of the Toolbar, and then click "More Controls" (last button) on the fly-out. This opens the More Controls dialog box.

    • 8

Scroll through the list of controls and choose "Shockwave Flash Object," and then click "OK." This inserts a Flash control box in the page.

    • 9

Right-click the control box and choose "Properties" to open the Properties dialog box.

    • 10

Click the "Playing" drop-down and choose "True" and click "OK" to close the dialog box. This movie will now autoplay.

Tips & Warnings

  • By default, SWF files autoplay in Web pages. If yours don't, you can turn autoplay on in your Web design application. In Dreamweaver, for example, place a check mark in the "Autoplay" option in the SWF Properties panel. If you use Flash's "Publish" option to create your Web page, turn off the "Pause at start" option in the "HTML" section of the "Publish Settings" dialog box.

  • Most programs "embed" rather than "import" SWFs. In other words, they are linked to the host document. When you deploy your document to the Internet, CD-ROM or local area network, make sure to include the SWF file. Otherwise, your movie won't play.
