How to Upgrade BMW GPS Software

Upgrade your BMW GPS software.

All BMW vehicles now come with integrated GPS systems. Many of these GPS systems are manufactured by Garmin. As Garmin provides software updates for its devices, BMW motorcycle owners are able to simply detach their GPS device and plug it into the computer to upgrade the software. If you cannot easily detach your BMW GPS system, you must take it into a BMW dealer for the upgrade.

Instructions

1. Unplug the power cable that attaches the GPS to the motorcycle.

2. Slide the locking lever at the neck of the GPS device to the left to unlock it. Slide the GPS out.

3. Plug your GPS into the power outlet with the A/C power adapter that came with it.

4. Plug your GPS into the computer with the USB cable. (You must have an IBM-compatible PC running Windows XP or later.)

5. Download the Garmin USB driver if your computer is unable to find the driver. (See Resources.)

6. Upgrade your BMW GPS software by clicking on "Download" on the Updates and Drivers support page. (See Resources.) Select "Run" to run the upgrade on your system. Select "OK," then "setup."

7. Let your GPS system completely upgrade its software before you unplug the device. Once the device is finished upgrading it will notify you.
