How to Fix the Electric Windows Control on a 1996 Lumina
The 1996 Chevrolet Lumina was manufactured with optional electric windows, which use a switch assembly to actuate window movement. This switch assembly is in the driver's-side door panel, and you can remove it with relative ease. The window regulator is turned by the power motor, which is activated when you press the switch. Any number of issues can prevent the switch from working correctly. The average backyard mechanic can repair the switch assembly of the Lumina in about 20 minutes.

1
Disconnect the Lumina's battery by turning the positive battery terminal counterclockwise with a 10 mm socket. Set the terminal away from the battery. It is crucial to not make this repair with the battery connected, as the powered system can short out while you are working on it.

2
Inspect and replace the fuse, if necessary. This is an often-overlooked cause for switch failure, so opening the fuse panel at the driver's-side kick panel and checking the filament of the power window junction can save time. If the fuse was blown, check the window for proper operation after replacing it.

Pry up the edge of the window switch assembly with a screwdriver. Be very gentle so that you don't damage the plastic switch cover. Once the switch assembly comes out about 1/2 inch, use your fingers to pull it completely out. The assembly is held in place with light pressure hooks, so you need just a little effort to disengage the switches from the door panel.

Remove the wiring harness connection to the switch assembly. The wires come together at the rear of the switches. Pull this adapter plug away from the terminals after pinching the small plastic catch on the outside. Replaced the switch assembly with a new unit, in reverse of removal.
