How to Fix Casement Window Cranks

The cranking mechanism is what allows a casement window to open so you can get a nice cool breeze. If the crank becomes too difficult to turn, then you may no longer be able to feel that breeze. Fortunately, fixing a casement window crank is usually not too difficult. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open the window far enough that the vinyl knob on the extension arm can be pulled free. You may have to remove a wooden stop to pull the arm free. Remove the operator arm, according to the construction of your model window. This may mean sliding the arm down to an access slot or removing a C-clip. You also may be required to unscrew the arm gear from hinged fittings.

Inspect the crank handle, arm and gear for wear and tear, and to see whether it is clogged or otherwise obstructed. Make sure the gears mesh cleanly. Brush away rust with a wire brush. Lubricate the mechanism with a multipurpose lubricant. Use a toothbrush and solvent to further clean the gears.

Use the wire brush to clean away dirt, grease and paint from the window track, frame and beneath the sash. “Reader’s Digest New Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual” recommends using automobile grease or petroleum jelly to completely lubricate the bottom of your casement window’s sash. Wear a glove when you apply it to avoid getting a splinter. Wipe away excess lubricant.

    • 4

Reassemble the casement window crank mechanism and attach it to the window. Lubricate the crank handle and the hinges with the multipurpose lubricant. Facilitate distribution of the lubricant through the gears by opening and closing the window several times. If the crank still does not work, replace it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start by lubricating the crank before removing it. Sometimes the gears just need a little oiling.

  • If wood is binding the window, try planing the sash until you get a better fit.

  • If you find any broken metal parts in the crank assembly, you will have to replace the mechanism.
